The four ways content gets shared again

• A repost: a post shared again onto the account’s own profile. It stays there as a repost, with the account that published it still credited as the author, and it does not expire.
• A story share: a post shared to a story. It lives in the 24-hour tray and is only kept if the owner saves it to a highlight, so a story share is a temporary mark.
• A re-upload: the account saves someone else’s photo or video and publishes it as its own post. Nothing in Instagram’s data connects it to the original, so it sits in the grid as an ordinary post and any credit lives in the caption.
• A remix or a collaboration: a reel made from another reel is credited to the original creator by Instagram itself, and a collaborator tag puts two accounts on one post, which makes that post appear on both profiles at once.

A newsletter, three announcements, and a week of taste

You are deciding whether to subscribe to a newsletter run by an account you found last week. The account’s own posts are three polished announcements, which is what an account posts when it wants to look a certain way.

The reposts are where the taste shows. An account’s reposts are often a faster read of what it is about than a month of its own posts: the sources it trusts, the arguments it amplifies, the topics it returns to. The opposite read works just as well. An account that reposts nothing but its own promotions and its friends’ giveaways is telling you something too, and it takes about two minutes to see it.

What appears on screen

• The reposts, collected: the posts an account shared again, gathered in one place instead of scattered through a feed.
• The original account: who published the post being shared, which stays attached to the repost.
• The material: the photo or video as Instagram serves it, with the caption it was published with.

The limits, and the reason for each

• Public profiles only: a repost lives on the profile that shared it, and a private account’s profile is served to approved followers alone. Nothing outside that group can read the reposts.
• A repost can be undone: the account can remove a repost like anything else on its profile, and it then disappears from the list. What you are reading is the profile as it stands.

Against the other routes

• Scrolling the profile: it works when the account posts rarely and you know what you are looking for. On an account with eight hundred posts it is an afternoon, and the reposts are mixed in with everything else.
• Following the account: the follow is visible, and it delivers the reposts over months, in the order they happen, mixed into a feed with everything else you follow.
