What a likes list actually is

A like is a link between one account and one post. The post carries the total as a number, and the accounts behind that number are a separate thing Instagram serves when someone opens the list. The two are stored differently, so a post can show a count while the list behind it changes.

The list is a current state and nothing more. It grows as accounts like the post, and it shrinks when an account removes a like or disappears. Nothing in it records that an account once liked the post and then stopped.

A small shop, forty posts, and twelve familiar names

You are deciding whether to buy from a small online shop you have never used. It has forty posts and modest engagement, and the number under each post is not enough to go on.

You open the post that announced the shop, then the one from last month, and read both lists. If the accounts look varied, plausible, and local, that is one signal. If the same twelve names sit on every post and none of those twelve has ever published anything, that is a different signal, and it took two minutes to see. Neither read is proof of anything. Both are more than the count alone gives you.

What appears on screen

• The accounts behind the count: the list of likers for the post you picked, collected in one place.
• The post they liked: the post you chose from the profile, so every list belongs to one specific post rather than to the account as a whole.
• Nothing more than that: a like carries no text and no visible time. It is a bare signal that an account pressed the button.

The limits, and the reason for each

• Public posts only: likes hang off the post, and a private account’s post is served only to approved followers. There is no separate liker route that is more open than the post itself.
• Deleted posts take the list with them: a post that is deleted or archived stops being served, and its liker list goes with it. Nothing here keeps a copy of a list from a post that no longer exists.
• A like is not a reason: the list tells you which accounts pressed the button, not what any of them thought. Patterns across several posts are informative, and one like on one post is a single data point.

Against the other routes

• Tapping the list in the app: the same list, one tap from the post, with your account attached to the tap and the post now part of your history there.
• Asking the person who posted: sometimes the fastest route, and it tells the poster exactly which post you are interested in.
